Personal Views on Singapore

April 14th, 2005 by aldebaran

Singapore, the country which i was born in. Independence date 9th August 1965. Came a long long way since the old days of racial riots and poor economic growth. Singapore has since grown into a bustling city with strong economic growth, a stable govt as well as security.

It all seems perfect. However no system is without flaws. Singapore itself is no exception. Though it has made many changes, especially in the govt sector, much remains to be done in the civil service as well as the mentality of the ppl.

The govt is strong, effective and by far, rewarding as well as smart, trying its best to improve Singapore’s position in the economic world. However, gd capable leaders are fading away. There isn’t any younger generation which is capable to take over the reins from the current leaders. A leader which i respect alot is Mr Goh Chok Tong. In his years as PM, Singapore hhas flourished and his towering presence at all summits and meets always brings pride as a Singaporean. I feel that the govt actually needs more opposition now. When the govt is now trying to advocate the ppl’s views, they should start appointing ppl who are commoners, ppl who can reach out and listen to the auntie or uncle next door or at the void decks or kopitiams. Someone who is loved by the old and the young in his/her community. Opposition parties come and go in our govt. I think this is mainly due to the fact that ppl usually can’t "fight" the current powerhouse in our Singapore govt. We need the ppl’s views. Though sometimes not all the ppls’ views are rational, the govt has the responsibility to listen and reach out to all kinds of ppl in Singapore, the Chinese, Malays, Indians and foreigners.

The society of Singapore as we all know is now a very faded and detached one. Many Singaporeans just want to get out of the country and settle elsewhere? Why? There are so many varying factors. 1)High stress 2)High cost of living 3)Dissatisfaction with the govt. and the list goes on.

Personally i would want to get out of Singapore when i have the chance and the money. The system here is abit flawed, though it’s great in many areas. Though Singapore believes in meritocracy, i do not see any reason why some govt sectors employ ppl based solely on their academic results. Academic results do not mean everything. One person who is smart might not be a good employee and one person who doesn’t produce excellent academic results might become the next millionaire. Take Mr Sim Wong Hoo as an example. A man who toiled and toiled and eventually succeeded. He did not have a degree at all. But it was all about his ability to work and come up with new ideas.

Ppl in Singapore also take too many things for granted, say for example, security. There is no sense of urgency at all. Take the recent tremors for example, the ppl are not really bothered unless their homes are being threatened.

Society too is a big problem in Singapore. Guys with long, brown hair are dubbed as beng and uneducated. HELLO! I have long and brown hair but i’m far from being uneducated. In actual fact, I love the see the look on ppl’s face when i speak in grammatically correct english to them. Come on Singaporeans, grow up!

As i’m a biker myself, I realised too that in general, Singaporeans, especially drivers, treat us bikers as 2nd class citizens. There’s so much propaganda of late against bikers. If the govt and the ppl hate bikers so much, why allow motorcycles to commute and travel ard in Singapore? Ban them once and for all and we shall see how the society in Singapore survives without motorcycles. I’m really so pissed at drivers who do not signal when changing lanes, cutting into lanes and road bullying. DRIVERS, we bikers pay road tax too! So what if we pay lesser road tax than you? We deserve some respect. So what if your high performance car is more expensive than us? Do you know what is called Respect others means respecting yourself? Don’t understand why bikers are always being discriminated against.

At the end of it all, in general Singapore is quite a ‘fine’ country to live in. I wouldn’t want to live here for the rest of my life though. Too boring and mundane.

Love,

Jason
